Cairngorms

There are lots of walking trails in the UK, though no real wilderness. At least if you compare to Sweden. The mountain range Cairngorms is probably as close as you get. It is part of the UK's largest national park. In fact the park is named after it. In the western part of the park there are some quaint villages, littered with outdoor warehouses. To the nort and east you will find ski resorts, believe it or not. The central part consist of difficult terrain at a fairly high altitude. The weather can be relentless and there are animals and birds that you find nowhere else in the country.

There is an ancient, 32 km, walking trail that runs right thrugh the central part of the park - The Lairig Ghru. There are many theories about the origins and the actual menaning of the name. A brief summary would be that it is a perilous mountain pass near the river Druie.
